Tandem Axle Questions
What are my options for replacing my single axle boat trailer for a tandem axle boat trailer?
I have a 2006 Trophy 1802 Walk Around(about 2000lbs with motor(no fuel). It came with a single axle trailer from the factory. I am in the military so will be traveling alot across country. I feel as though a tandem axle trailer would be easier to pull with my 1500 Silverado. Also the extra tires will serve as a little more piece of mind in case of a blow out on the highway. I’m concerned that the boat will be too short or not weigh enough. I’m sure there is a trailer out there somewhere that will work and be safer than what I have for the long haul. Also looking for a trailer that is easy to launch and retrieve by myself. Thanks for the help!
The amount of money that it’ll take to re-engineer the trailer to a tandem won’t be worthwhile. It’s NOT simply just adding the suspension and wheels to become a tandem. Everything has to be re-centered to support the boat properly over the balance point of the trailer. Then there’s adding the proper “Surge” braking system. Realistically, just get one or two spare tire mounts and the proper sized wheel/tire combos and call it a day. The trailer is proper for the boat from the factory, so go with that. There are options out there, but are you willing to throw out a bunch of cash for no real advantage gains? I’d make a few changes, but not what you’re thinking. I’ve owned trailerable boats for over thirty years and have towed boats as big as 26′ Express Cruisers from coast to coast. In all that time, I’ve only experienced a single flat tire. To make launching and receiving easier, you can install bunker slicks to ease everything, but you really don’t need those either. I launch/retrieve that same 26′ boat myself on ramps all over the country. It just takes some practice. Learning to drive the boat onto the trailer is far better than adding “Roller Bunkers” and can be learned in an afternoon by anyone.
BTW, trailer tires are built to a much higher standard than a passenger car tire. Look on the sidewalls and you’ll see “Trailer” tires are at least 6 plys on the tread and 4 plys on the sidewalls, DOUBLE the normal strength of car tires. A tandem trailer isn’t any easier to tow than a single axle trailer, but it’s more expensive when you cross bridges that charge a toll.
