Transfer Tank Questions
How do I transfer my 20 gallon saltwater tank to a 55 gallon saltwater tank in one day?
I need the fastest way to do this because I only have tomarrow.
Its not to bad. Here is how I would do it.
-The night before or 1st thing in the morning, pre-mix 30-35 gallons of salt water. I would do this in a new garbage with a power head and heater. You can use this garbage can in the future for water changes.
-Siphon water from the 20 into 5 gallon buckets, saving as much water as possible. Place the tank inhabitants in these 5′s as well.
-Scoop the sand/substrate out into a bucket. I would use this sand in the 55 if you can, as this will reduce cycle time. If you need to rinse it, make sure you do it in salt water as this will preserve the bacteria.
-Move the 20 out of the way to set up the 55. Have shims and a bubble level on hand to level the 55.
-Pour the sand in as well as your pre-mixed salt water. When you have approx 15 gallons of water in, check the tank to make sure it is level, shim where necessary.
-You can place your decorations in at this time as well as install the filter.
-Continue to fill with the pre-mixed salt water until you are 1/2 full. Pour in the water from the 20, leaving the bucket w/ tank inhabitants for last, as you will need to acclimate them slowly to the new tank.
-Turn on the filter, make sure everything is functioning properly, acclimate your fish and you’ll be done.
It should take maybe 4 hrs to change everything over. Have plenty of towels on hand b/c you’ll probably make a mess.
